Dental Onlays
There are a number of treatments available to restore teeth that are broken or decayed. Our dentist often recommends treatments that are more conservative, as they work to preserve more of your tooth’s structural integrity and are less invasive. One of the conservative restorative options available at the office of Andrew Cohen, DMD, and Associates is a dental onlay.
Also known as partial crowns, dental onlays are often recommended when a tooth does not need a full crown but requires more attention than a filling. This typically occurs when teeth experience damage from cavities, heavy bite forces, trauma, or even just the normal wear and tear of daily life. Smaller fractures, such as craze lines or stress fractures, can be repaired with dental onlays to bring the tooth back to full strength and health. Onlays are usually recommended when the damage extends to one or more of the cusps (pointed corners) of the tooth.
Your dental onlay will be custom-created from tooth-colored material, such as composite resin or porcelain so that it blends in with your natural teeth. The onlay will then be carefully placed on the tooth, cemented in place, and polished to give you back a beautiful smile.
